WD My Passport Edge for Mac Review

WD My Passport Edge for Mac Review

If you are after a little extra storage space for your Mac that you can carry with you wherever you go nice and easily then the My Passport Edge from Western Digital could be just what you need. With its small, compact size and 500GB capacity, this is a handy portable external hard drive that may look little but holds a lot.

The My Passport Edge has a new sleek, slim shape, which makes it easier to carry around but means that the FireWire ports found on previous models are no longer present due to its size. Instead the drive supports USB 3.0 and comes with the added benefit of being BUS-powered, meaning no power cable is necessary. All we need to make it work is a single USB cable, which WD have been nice enough to include. The Edge utilises a new internal hard drive that is unbelievably slim with a thickness of just 7mm but as is the case here, good things come in small packages.

As was also the case with previous external drives, the Edge comes in a tough aluminium case that does a good job of providing sturdy protection while keeping the drive light, weighing in at a lightweight 0.36 pounds. This casing not only looks good but it will also provide reliable protection should it get bumped or even dropped.

The My Passport Edge works like a dream with the Mac and can read and write files in mere seconds, making the transfer between your drive and your Mac quick and easy. It also works well with Time Machine with no configuring required; once it is out of the box it is ready to go.

As well as storage, the Edge also comes with a useful management software suite included, while installed on the drive is a DMG that provides a diagnostics tool, a sleep timer, a drive erase function and WD registration. The drive also allows you to protect it with a password for added security should it be lost or stolen.

The My Passport Edge has been designed with convenience in mind. Thanks to its slim dimensions it can easily be tucked away and transported around while its lightweight nature means you will barely notice you are carrying it. This is as small as hard drives come and you will be surprised at just how much you can squeeze into its tiny body. It hooks up to your Mac incredibly easily with minimal fuss and operates fast alongside your computer. The useful software tools are the icing on the cake and make this an obvious choice for anyone looking for a decent external drive.

If there is a negative point it is the fact that it cannot hold more than 500GB of data so if you intend on storing more you may want to look elsewhere but this is hardly a criticism. Thin, durable, fast and powerful, this is an ideal hard drive for anyone looking for a little extra space and a lot of value for money.
