Things to know about iOS 5

Apple fans are going crazy waiting for the release of the new iOS 5, but the rest of the world is waiting to find out what the fuss is about. For those of you out there here are the things to know about iOS 5 and maybe you too will be going crazy until the Fall release date. Taking a broad overview of iOS 5, you will see that Apple are updating their iPhone’s and iPad’s to work more like a computer. The operating systems on these mobile devices have always been one or two (or more, depending on whom you ask) steps behind portable computer devices. The iOS 5 system integrates more of what we love about how computers work into the already loved design of the portable device.

The notification centre is one of the main ways that Apple is using the iOS 5 to take what is great about the functionality of computers and adding them to portable devices. If you’ve seen how the new Android devices deliver messages and notifications then you will be happy with this new development. For those who don’t, this notification centre means that it’s easier but less obtrusive to get alerted to new notifications. A small box appears at the top of the screen letting you know when you have a new text message, e-mail, stock update for example, and you can keep going on with what you’re doing without the screen blacking out and everything else moving to the back ground. One main benefit of this is when you’re playing a game, but it’s also helpful when you’re using the GPS to navigate your way somewhere new. Having all the notifications in one place also makes it easier to see when you have new updates rather than having those little ‘1′ or ‘2′ numbers above each individual app. This makes it easier to keep on doing what you’re doing without being interrupted unnecessarily. This is one of the main changes that shows how Apple are making their portable devices more like their MacBook’s; your computer screen doesn’t stop working when you get a new e-mail you just get a subtle alert by the tab flashing, a noise ringing or a pop up in the corner.

Apple is also making more use of the lock screen by putting all of your new notifications there. The lock screen will now be full of the newest notifications so you can check what’s going on with one click of the lock button and decide if you need to read the whole message. With one touch you can also access the newest e-mail or text message.

Safari for portable devices is now looking a lot more like the Safari on your home computer. This tabbed browsing means that you now have easier and quicker access to all of your open web windows in one place. You can also move the tabs around to an order you prefer, just like you can on your MacBook Safari window. Apple has also unleashed Reader for Safari. This update is a great way to read news articles because it takes away all of the clutter (like ads), increases the font size, and changes the layout so it’s more pleasing to the eye. Reader makes it easier to view web pages on devices with smaller screens like iPhone’s and iPod’s. You can also view two windows side-by-side by swiping the screen. Never misquote again.

But Apple hasn’t forgotten that these are mobile devices, designed to be different to your notebook and home computer. With Safari, for instance, they have created a reading list which is different to your average bookmark. This is to remind you about articles that you have read and you liked, or to help you to keep all of your research in one place. With Cloud integration, you can access the reading list on your iPad at work and your MacBook at home.

Newsstand is also something mobile centric. This feature allows you to keep all of your newspaper and magazine subscriptions in one place. Not only does this make it easier for you to access everything, but there is also the automatic update feature so you don’t have to go searching every time a new issue is released.

If you’ve noticed anything in particular about this article, it’s that the words ‘easier’ and ‘quicker’ have been used over and over again. This is because that’s what the iOS 5 has done; made using your device a lot more easily and a lot more quickly.
