Protecting your Digital Life : Get Backup

Protecting your Digital Life : Get Backup

If there is one aspect of computing I am most paranoid about it has to be data loss.

Years worth of music, hundreds of pounds worth of iTunes purchases and a lifetime full of family photos these are the things that simply can’t be replaced. At this point you are probably shouting “Time Machine” in my direction but although Time Machine offers a robust backup system it doesn’t offer much in the way of customisation.

Get Backup by Belight Software is a sophisticated backup application for Mac users. Get Backup comes in two flavours ‘free’ and ‘Pro’ (with the Pro adding a number of additional features including encrypted and incremental backups and two way sync). Get Backup is ideal for beginners right through to Mac ‘experts’ who want to sync drives and computers across a network.

On initial start up you will notice Get Backup comes with five simple backup template routines, simply click on the iPhoto, Mail, iTunes etc icons to add them to your backup routine.

Get Backup doesn’t restricted to these set templates. Click the + symbol to add a custom routine. As you can see I have set Get Backup to protect my Dropbox folder. You can add numerous routines, select a routine and click “Properties” for more information. I am using the Pro version so have a few additional features not accessible in the free version.

You can exclude files from the backup and set aspects such as archive size and the regularity of the backup. The customisable schedule tool allows to fully automate the backup and synchronization processes, so that backups are built and sync takes place on a regular basis (daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly). Specify the backup and sync start time down to a minute.

You can even create separate schedules for several backup and file sync projects. Better still you don’t have to have all your backups happening at one time, instead Get Backup allows you to schedule different tasks for different times of the week / month etc.

Back up to any mounted device/drive
The program allows you to save backups to any locally mounted device/drive, including FireWire, USB, ATA, SCSI, CD and DVD devices, or network volumes.

Synchronise Files or Folders

Synchronize files and folders on your laptop and desktop computers, or any mounted drive. Two-way synchronisation (Pro only) ensures that you have the most recent version of files you worked with, no matter which computer you are using. Schedule sync processes for more convenience and flexibility.

This is an essential tool for photographers who backup a large number of files to different drives. I wouldn’t dream of taking my main hard drive of images out on the road. Instead I can sync a particular project of images to an external drive, work on them with a client and sync the data back on the return home.

Encryption (Pro only)
Secure your backups using one of four encryption standards (AES-128, AES-256, Blowfish or Triple DES) to prevent unauthorized archive restore. The ability to encrypt backups provides a high level of comfort and peace of mind when storing backup archives on external hard drives, third-party servers, and other locations where others might have access to your archives.

In this instance I set the label colour for my DropBox backup to pick and started the initial backup process. I run “Versioned” backups once a week as my control freak nature can’t hope with the idea of incremental. Get Backup offers three main forms of backup :

Full — all selected files are saved, and the resulting archive replaces the previously created one.
Versioned — all selected files are saved in a new backup archive, and the previous archives remain intact.
Incremental — each time a backup is built, only the files that were changed are saved in the new backup archive. (Pro only)

Although Time Machine is a great way to back up your Mac if you want to get the most of your backup drive then Get Backup offers a range of sophisticated tools ensuring you never lose another file again. The application offers complete control of scheduling, it compresses your data and offers quick restoration to any computer. Large files or backups can also be segmented over multiple drives or discs.

Get Backup is also great if you store data off site with software encryption you can password protect your archives using one of the encryption methods (AES-128, AES-256, Blowfish or Triple DES).

If you are like me and one backup is never enough Get Backup offers the ability to sync files on a number of drives or computers and two way sync is available in the Pro version. The built in backup templates are also great. I know a number of people who have managed to wipe their address book through a mis-sync with their computer, iPhone or MobileMe. With Get Backup you can set your address book to backup once a week, easy !.

Anyway don’t take our word for it, head over to and download the free version to get started.
