Localscope for iPhone App Review
It is often the case for many people that they one day realise just how long they have lived in a place without really getting to know it. You go to the same places, follow the same routes and see the same people but don’t you ever get the urge to dig a bit deeper and see what else is going on? No matter how small a town might be, it is packed with people, places and activity that you might never even notice. Fortunately there is now an app available that will open your eyes and allow you to see your local area in greater detail. Localscope is just $1.99 from the App Store.
The name of the app is rather apt as it does indeed provide local scope and help you explore the area in greater detail. Whatever it is you want to know, Localscope is packed with information about your location. While it can pinpoint where you are and share it with other people, it can also locate any amenities nearby and show you what the local population are tweeting. If it is happening near you, Localscope can tell you.
It is incredibly easy to use. Go to the home screen and you will either be able to search for a specific item or choose the Discover option, which will provide you with recommendations. You can also modify your location settings if you would rather not give too much away about your location. While the search is great if you have something in mind, the Discover option is even better as it compiles various sources of local data, from photo apps such as Instagram and Flickr, to social networks such as the good old reliable Facebook and Twitter. In between it also sources data from YouTube, Yelp and of course Google. From here you can choose the source that interests you and see what people are publicly uploading around you.
Search does have its use however and whatever you are looking for, it will be able to tell you where the nearest one is. Again, the answers come from the same variety of sources that Discover uses. Viewing the results is also an easy and customisable process. You can either choose from a picture, map or augmented reality display to show your findings. Augmented reality in particular is a pleasure to use and it works incredibly smoothly.
What Localscope cannot do is navigate for you as the focus really is on exploration. It will tell you what is nearby but it will not give you detailed instructions to get there so you will still need to use a decent maps app for that aspect. But this is hardly a flaw as the app is otherwise near-perfect. Since it covers more or less the whole world it means you can not only explore your local area but also take advantage of its features when on holiday, or simply enjoying a day out Wherever you are, Localscope will help you get the most out of your surroundings for an excellent price.
