Edit: After half day, my wife’s Mac started having the same problem. I have then applied the solution that I found in the Apple
iOS And OS X: Two Evolutionary Paths
Revolving in its fourth year since its debut, apple’s iOS has evolved out too many changes within it. The device was initially launched as an operating system for only one device and with the passage of time; it has the ability to power three devices, the iPod, the iPad and the iPhone. The iOS has continuously come out with exceptional features and its latest release of iOS 5 earlier this month is another cap on the head.
The Dawning Of Mac OS X
The era of Mac OS X dawned after the release of Mac OS X 10.0 under the code name of Cheetah in the year 2001 which was immediately replaced by 10.1 update. Mac OS X Puma landed into the markets after a period of six months of the launching of Cheetah which had additional features as well as some fixed up bugs.
After a year, apple released another version of Mac operating system under the number of 10.2 which was coded after the animal Jaguar. With this release, the Mac systems got a new path of dimension as it included the feature of iChat along with the innovative application of Bonjour. The month of October in the year 2003 saw the release of Mac OS X 10.3 Panther, having additional features from its predecessor which included Expose, iChat AV and the great launch of the Safari web Browser.
The next release was identified in the year 2005 in which the model was named as Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. This updated version dawned the features of Spotlight, VoiceOver, Dashboard, Automator, system wide dictionary, and Mac syncing. The release of Tiger bought a significant change in the OS X systems than its predecessors. It also ended up the routine of year end updates of Mac OS X as the company said prior to the release of Tiger that it would slow down the pace of development of its operating systems as they were becoming more and more mature.
iOS: Advent Till Now
Under this heading, I will be portraying the progress of iOS devices in the same four year period. The original v=model of iOS was released in the year 2007 which marked the evolution of iPhone operating system. The version 1.0 of iPhone, introduced the core elements of the interface which supported multi-touch computing, swiping, pinch to zoom, double tap zooming, and various other features. The initial version came out to be a very stable model which was a positive aspect for iOS. As a matter of fact, the initial version of iOS was much polished than that of the Mac OS X which was quite surprising under the circumstances the Mac operating systems had a background of nearly two operating decades.
After a year after, the iOS version 2.0 came into the market which bought the App Store with it. iPhone OS 3 made its debut in the market in the year 2003 which had in itself many long-awaited features such as MMS and copy-and-paste features along with the push notification element. The last feature was the core of the release. It had the mechanism of making alert about all the apps installed in it for important events even when they are turned off. Although, it cannot be termed as multi-tasking, but, having the feature of letting your app making you alert when they are not used, was a quite significant improvement in the device.
The launching of iOS 4 bought numerous changes. The name changed, multi-tasking had been added in and FaceTime was introduced. Multi tasking eliminated the burden on doing several chores within the iOS and also had folders and an iOS inbox in Mail along with a system wide spell check.
Comparing, many elements of iOS 4 were bearing quite resemblance with the Mac OS X model of Jaguar and Panther. On the other hand, the iOS is an after math of Tiger. Tiger had Mac syncing and iOS 5 introduced iCloud service, Tiger included the Dashboard feature and whereas, iOS 5 added in notification Center.
Based on the above mentioned discussion, Mac operating systems faces only one sole competitor, which is the Microsoft Windows OS. But the advantage in this is that Windows OS rarely innovates its OS and has only touched that level which is the base provided in iOS devices.
For iOS, on the other hand, Apple has a dominating position in the share market in comparison to android. Moreover, the other touch operating systems are quite far from this level. Increased competition is also a benefit for iOS as the company will thrive to improve the product more thereby, increasing the market share.
