How Text Edit Helps You Open and Save Word Documents

There are strong chances that you get emails that contain MS Word formatted documents as attachments. These can be basically :

.DOCX                                                                    .XML                                                          .DOC

_______________

This is certainly not a problem for MS Word users, but other people might find it hard to open such files. On the positive side, most other word processors open MS Word files easily.
If you receive an MS Word file (through email attachment, or downloaded off the internet), and if you are working on Mac OS X Snow Leopard, you don’t exactly require any other program to open and edit the Word file, since you would have Text Edit.
Text Edit is able to open MS Word files that contain basic formatting, like fonts, simple text formatting (italics, bold etc), line spacing, colors, justification and alignment etc. But if there are advanced formatting features, like footnotes, graphics, style sheets, borders, bullets etc, then these features will not survive the conversion process.
As they convert, the tables will be translated, and their appearance will be changed. If you need any tips to use Text Edit, here they are.
As you save a file in Text Edit as a Word document, the formatting you did would be changed in MS Word. This would mostly include tables, numbering and buttons- but not the style sheets. So you can work on MS Word documents even if you do not have MS Word.
What do you think? Do you need MS Word for Mac if your basic needs are being fulfilled without additional tools? Let us know what’s your point of view in the comments below.
