Get Your ‘Gleek' On

Glee is one of the most popular TV series in the world, touching all demographics from high school students to grandmothers and everyone in between. If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t heard of this musical comedy series, then you’re in for a treat. Glee follows the students and teachers at a mid-western American High School as they face the struggles of day to day life the only way they know how; through song. The young cast have covered such hits as Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ to Britney Spears’s ‘Stronger’ and the classic musical ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’.

Glee has become a cult phenomenon with more than just a TV series; it was spawned record breaking albums, a concert/musical, and a 3D movie of said concert. But Glee is taking over more than just the airwaves; it’s also taking over Apple. Here are the top Glee purchases from the iTunes store.

Every week a new collection of Glee merchandise is available to download from the iTunes store. The latest episode of Glee always ranks highly in the weekly wrap ups as everyone from around the world rushes to get their Glee fix. This week is no exception, with the latest episode again featured on the front of the iTunes page. As well as the newest episode Glee fans are also treated to a new mini album every week. These albums only have between four and eight songs on them and they include the songs featured on the show that week. Listeners can buy the full albums or just pick the songs that they like. Fans can also buy the original versions of the songs so they can compare the Glee cast version to how it originally sounded. Many people mock Glee for ‘taking’ other peoples songs, and this is a great way to introduce a new generation to the likes of Madonna, AC/DC and Hall & Oats, just to name a few.

About half way through each season an album is produced with the best and most popular songs so far. Many fans opt to buy this album rather than the ones released in between. The Glee cast have also released some special albums including one dedicated to Madonna, a Christmas album, and even one full of songs sung by the main character’s rival Glee club—The Warblers.

If you’re afraid you’ll miss out on the newest episode you can buy a season pass and have the episode automatically downloaded to your iTunes account as soon as it is released. A season pass also entitles you to all of the previously released episodes so you don’t have to go searching for an episode past. At the time of writing there are currently 6 episodes of season three released, 22 of season two and 23 for season one. You can buy the first two seasons and catch up in the time between the newest episodes.

But it may surprise people that Glee isn’t just about the music. They currently have three tie-ins as well as an unofficial guide to the book available at the iBooks store. The tie-ins are great ways for fans to catch up on the antics of their favourite characters in the time span not covered by the series. One follows the group during their summer vacation and another tells the story of the character’s before the pilot episode. Many reviews of these books say that they are written for the ‘tweenage’ Glee fans—that is the fans who are 12 years old or younger—but any excuse to get people reading is a good one.

Lastly is the Glee karaoke app. This is a fun and free app that will make anyone sound like they deserve a recording contract. Sing into your mac mobile device and the patented pitch perfector will work wonders giving you the voice of a star. You can sing along to the songs from the series or your own iTunes library collection, and create a group from matching your vocals on top of those from other fans from around the world. This app is a unique twist to social networking because you can meet people via singing.
