Chat App Usage Beats SMS

Chat App Usage Beats SMS

Recent reports have come in to show that surprisingly chat apps like WhatsApp have overtaken traditional SMS messaging.

Internet based messaging apps now have been reported to send on average 19 billion messages per day compared to 17.6 billion text messages are sent per day. The data was recorded over 2012 and it suggests that in 2014, 50 billion messages will be sent per day through chat apps like WhatsApp, SnapChat and Kik leaving only 21 billion SMS messages to be sent.

Yet, from these statistics, it is still expected SMS messages will not die out still playing a key role in the industry. SMS messaging is incredibly popular within businesses at the moment, who will be unlikely to change anytime soon. An Informa spokesperson called Pamela Clark-Dickson quoted about the popularity of SMS saying “it can be used on all mobile phones and they [businesses] do not need smartphones to use it.”
