Apple Acquires WifiSLAM For Around $20 Million

It is reported that Apple has just acquired the two year old start up company WifiSLAM for $20 million. WiFiSLAM developed ways to discover a way to discover the users location from just by using their WiFi connection inside a building.

This could be a suggestion that Apple are planning on taking their maps and location services to the next level. Google released indoor maps for popular buildings such as Airports and sports stadiums but are yet to expand on their current library

We are building the next generation of location-based mobile apps that, for the first time, engage with users at the scale that personal interaction actually takes place. Applications range from step-by-step indoor navigation, to product-level retail customer engagement, to proximity-based social networking.

It is also worth noting that WiFiSlam has some fairly well know investors such as Google’s Don Dodge.

Apple have been working extremely hard on their maps after the launch did not start so well causing Apple CEO Tim Cook to apologise to the public but we have seen improvements since.
